VISION AND MISSION
La Verna: Palliative care volunteers is a civil society organization which provides free and accessible support to severely or terminally ill and dying people in the City of Zagreb, lead by a vision of no person dying lonely but rather surrounded by love, peace and care. By offering our presence, we provide help and compassion to people suffering from incurable illnesses as well as their families, thus easing their suffering.
The work of the organization is inspired by the compassionate acts of St. Francis of Assisi, a Catholic friar. Staff and volunteers provide support to everyone irrespective of their religious, national or other affiliation.
ACTIVITIES
VOLUNTEER TEAM – volunteers provide psychosocial and spiritual support to severely/terminally ill people and their families as they visit them in their homes, in a palliative care unit of a hospital specialized in lung diseases and in care homes.
COUNSELLING SERVICE – a professional provides emotional and psychosocial support to severely/terminally ill people and their families with the aim to help them cope with the difficulties of illness and caring for an ill person.
GRIEF SUPPORT UNIT – this is a part of the counselling service which focuses on providing professional support and help to those grieving the loss of a loved one.
ORTHOPEDIC EQUIPMENT LOAN SERVICE – we loan equipment such as patient beds, toilet chairs, walkers, wheelchairs, bathtub attachments and other equipment to patients and their families in other to ease the burden of living with illness and its consequences.
COLLABORATIONS
In palliative care, a team effort is extremely important, with the well-being of the patient and their family at the center. We are therefore proud of the collaboration we have built over time with health and social institutions. We cooperate daily with palliative care coordinators and mobile palliative teams of health centers and palliative care services in hospitals, with whom we aspire to make palliative care as high-quality and comprehensive as possible for our fellow citizens.
